Blog 5 - How did the second contemporary issue effect your principles? Are you better able to see areas where your principles need adjusting? What adjustments need to be made? Which philosopher's position was least consistent with your own principles and why?

The second issue definitely questioned my principles.  It's definitely a difficult matter to determine when life ACTUALLY begins.  From my previous learning and knowledge, I have always believed it to be when the sperm and the oocyte fertilize to form a zygote.  From that point on the zygote rapidly beings growing and nine months later a baby is born.  But then there is the controversial issue that it would be murder if abortion were to take place, and I used to consider myself pro-abortion.  It was extremely difficult for me to choose one philosopher to agree with because both have good supporting arguments.  However, I feel like I agree with Noonan more because I agree with most of his principles.  The reason why I do not agree with Warren to the same extent is because some of her ideas are arguable.  For example, when she says that women have the right to control their own body, I somewhat disagree with.  If a woman is willing to engage in actions that lead her to become pregnant, she must then share her body with the growing fetus.  Also, I disagree with her list of personhood.  I feel that scientifically, there is much more to life than the ability to communicate and reason. This week I will be commenting on http://ndeahterry.blogspot.com

  1. dallas,
when you talk about warren, you say that if a woman is willing to engage in actions that lead her to become pregnant then she must share her body. where do you draw the line? rape? incest? a broken condom? your statement is to generalized. but that is just my opinion.

    1. I meant if she voluntary engaged in those actions. Rape and molestation would not be included because the woman was forced into such actions. However if she willingly put herself in that situation she should have to deal with the consequences.

  2. I agree that the woman is responsible for the child as well as her actions, but while struggling with this myself I began to wonder if that is fair to child. Is it fair to bring them into a life where the mother and fatheR might no care for their child?

    1. I also have had trouble grasping my head around that idea. I feel like every child deserves a chance to live though. What would be better, getting a chance to live in this world or being taken from it without even a chance? What do you think?

Blog 6 - How did the third contemporary issue effect your principles? What more have you found that you need to reasonably respond to these moral issues beyond a set of principles? Are their other skills or knowledge that will make you a more effective ethical being? What are they?

I found that for the contemporary issues I went into class with a strong-minded idea of what side I was going to agree with. But after discussion I would actually completely change my view. For the death penalty I was entirely for it, but at the end of class I agreed with Hooke more. I think that we can use the guilty for labor and that prison should be more of a rehabilitation service. I also agree that it would be alright for repeat offenders. By following this pattern it really does set a higher moral standard. Despite my strong ethical principles, I feel like the most important part of ethical being is an open mind. Because I have such an open mind and am always listening, I feel like it really helped me to broaden and understand others philosophy's and even change some of my own. Sometimes I find that other people are somewhat ignorant and only believe in their own moral standard. However, by educating myself and appreciating the diversity of other people's morals, I have found a new set of principles. This week I will be commenting on http://ashantijones.blogspot.com/
